The groom has always had a customary set of responsibilities to carry out before, during, and after the wedding. Obviously nothing is set in the stone but these duties are quite traditional. They include:
Selecting the engagement ring alone or with your fiancée-to-be
Compiling your part of the guest list and making sure that your parents draw up their guest list
Choosing your attendants: best man, groomsmen/ushers
Choosing the attire for your attendants
Selecting thank-you gifts for your attendants
Arranging (and paying for) lodging for your attendants
Selecting a gift for the bride (optional)
Arranging the honeymoon (with your fiancée)
Choosing wedding bands with your fiancé
Planning the bachelor party or other event for groomsmen, if applicable. (The best man may also do this.
Obtaining the marriage license
Arranging transportation from the ceremony site to the reception site for the groomsmen
Being dressed and ready for the ceremony or pictures a half-hour ahead of time
Giving the wedding rings to the best man for safekeeping
Preparing and delivering all fees for the ceremony, or delegating the best man to do so
Standing in the receiving line (if there is one) or being sure—with the bride—to greet all guests during the reception
Making toasts and responding to toasts at the rehearsal dinner and the reception
Cutting the cake with the bride
Dancing the first dance with the bride and dancing with your mother and mother-in-law and the maid/matron of honor
